First Step For Identifying Your Ideal Career

First Step For Identifying Your Ideal Career
By Natalie Ekberg

Often people struggle when asked to identify their ideal career. If you are one of them, the following tips might be helpful.

Sometimes it is difficult to identify exactly the right career or job, so looking at it from a broader perspective and then "zooming in" might be an option.

You can start by imagining your ideal day and see how your work fits into that. You might discover that all you really want is to have a part-time job from home. Or, on the opposite side of the spectrum, your biggest wish may be to work in a super-posh office, surrounded by branded furniture, with you flying around the world on business trips. Alternatively, perhaps you want to be part of a small organization with potential for growth with you being part of it. Basically, you are deciding on your everyday environment here.

You might take it even further and address your wished location for your job. Is it Wall Street? Is it an orphanage in India? Is it your local school?

The most important thing about this exercise is to be honest with your answers. Your feelings will tell you the best career for you. If the place and surroundings you imagine feel right, then it is the right place for you. And don´t be mistaken, people know exactly what they want in their work place and you are no different!

I used to have a client who, when he allowed himself to be free in his imagination, described his new office in such detail, that he even included a smiling receptionist! Needless to say, he proceeded to find just the right place. He knew when he got there that it was the right place, because he identified the feelings with those he felt when doing the exercise!

Next step would be to decide on your position within your team. Would you prefer to be part of a small team? Or do you perform your very best when you are on your own? Do you crave being a leader? Or leading is the last thing on your mind, you feel much more comfortable when following?

Once you can see what sort of environment would make you motivated and stimulated and what kind of team or position would suit your personality, working out the kind of job you would like will become easier.
